No. 1-I

SEED

No. 3-I

John Jay was just absolutely dominate in its 19-6 win over Arlington

in the quarterfinals.

HOW THEY

GOT HERE

Beat archrival Clarkstown North for the second consecutive week, 21-7

QB Danny Bogucki, RB Bobby Henderson, RB Rob Haughton

PLAYERS TO WATCH

QB Ryan McManus, OL/DL Kevin Giordano, RB/LB Thomas Lent

The Patriots are coming off a huge high with the victory over Arlington. If they have to play on their mess of a field, they'd love it. It's perfect for their power game.

THE LOWDOWN

The Vikings and the Patriots have not played yet this season. South's only loss was by 14 to Ketcham -- which Jay crushed

INTANGIBLES

John Jay, 20-7. No way Jay won't dominate with its power game for a second week in a row.

PREDICTION

Poughkeepsie

Ossining

Ken Barger

8-0

RECORD

6-2

No. 1-II

SEED

No. 2-I

The Pioneers, the No. 2 team in the state, absolutely destroyed Harrison, 41-6

HOW THEY GOT HERE

The Pride had a great come-from-behind win in the quarterfinals to beat Gorton, 35-26

QB Josh Oliver, RB Greg Charter, LB Lawrence Featherston

PLAYERS TO WATCH

QB Brian Connolly, RB Josh Almodovar, OL/DL Devante Harrell

In a driving snowstorm, Poughkeepsie showed how powerful it truly is on both offense and defense vs. Harrison

THE LOWDOWN

Connolly is a great pocket passer who might give the Pioneers some trouble through the air.

INTANGIBLES

Poughkeepsie, 31-13. Ossining has had a nice season, but there's no way they're out-gunning the Pioneers.

2011 HVSR POWER RANKINGS

Week Nine

1. Poughkeepsie (7-0) -- Not quite sure yet what last week's 31-21 win over Nyack after trailing 21-0 means. Does it show great mental fortitude, or are the Pioneers getting tired in the homestretch?.

2. Spackenkill (7-1) -- Now we'll see what the Spartans are made of. Spackenkill takes on defending Section Nine, Class B champ New Paltz in the playoffs on Saturday. Yeah, Sparty won the first round. But the playoffs do strange things to first-timers.

3. John Jay (6-1) -- John Jay and Arlington will play for the third time in two years on Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Section One, Class AA playoffs. Best game on the schedule so far.

4. Wallkill (7-1) -- Seven straight wins for the Panthers, who should crush Port Jervis in the semifinals of the Section Nine, Class A playoffs. And then it's Cornwall, for the fourth time in two years.

5. Marlboro (7-1) and Lourdes (5-2) -- The Iron Dukes have been quietly consistent since the early-season loss at Spackenkill. Think about it -- two 7-6 losses for Lourdes. Two points is all that separates OLL from an unbeaten season.

Honorable mention: Haldane (6-1)

Every Monday during the fall, Hudson Valley Sports Report will power rank the top five high school football teams in Dutchess and Ulster counties, regardless of class size. It will take into account record, opponent strength and intangibles such as injuries.
