Arlington girls advance to sectional quarters

FREEDOM PLAINS – Apparently eager to get its first-round Section One, Class AA playoff game over with in a hurry, the Arlington High School girls’ soccer team all three of its goals in the first 40 minutes, and the No. 3 Admirals beat No. 14 Carmel, 3-0, on Saturday morning.

The game was pushed up to a 9:30 a.m. start to beat the freak October snowstorm, which it did, but it will still played in 34-degree temperatures.

The victory earns Arlington a berth in the quarterfinals on Wednesday against No. 6 North Rockland, the team that knocked the Admirals out of the sectionals last year en route to winning the title.

“I thought we came out pretty strong today, but I was worried about this match because we’ve played Carmel twice before and, though we beat them, both games were close at halftime,” Arlington coach Kieran McIlvenny said. “We moved the ball well. In the second half, I’m not sure if we took our foot off the pedal or what, but we still had control of the match. In the end I was happy to get it over with.”

Shannon Palmer, Claire Childs and Ally Pushkarsh all scored for Arlington, which improved to 14-2-1.

63-0 win puts Haldane football in Section One, Class D final

COLD SPRING – What a day for the Blue Devils!

Not that it was unexpected, but No. 1 Haldane High School certainly made sure it’s going into the Section One, Class D football championship game on a roll after it manhandled No. 4 Palisades Prep, 63-0, in a semifinal game on Saturday.

The Blue Devils will take on No. 2 Tuckahoe next Saturday for the title at Mahopac High School.

Everybody got into the act on this day. Quarterback Elias Lopez ran the ball four times and scored three touchdowns. Bryant Dain had a touchdown on the ground. So did Will Moss, James Moss and Nick Junjulas.

Bobby Vahos, Ken Heintzman and Ryan Dahlia all caught a touchdown pass.

Lethargic Beacon falls to Tappan Zee

BEACON – Brian Mahon suspected this might happen.

A week after his Beacon High School football team lost a heartbreaking game to Byram Hills that knocked them out of the playoffs, the Bulldogs dropped an 18-7 decision to Tappan Zee on Saturday.

“It was rough this week to get them going,” Mahon said. “The motivation just wasn’t there as much as I would have liked. And with the weather, they were just not into playing. But, I get it. I hoped for more from them, but I get it. It’s tough coming back, so close to reaching your goal. They felt like they had nothing to play for.”

Beacon was unbeaten at 6-0 heading into the Byram Hills game but, due to the new Piner scoring system, its strength of schedule was such that the Bulldogs needed to win out to qualify for the Section One, Class A playoffs.

Jarrell Brown scored Beacon’s only touchdown and rushed for 82 yards.

Walters runs Ketcham into win over Ramapo

RAMAPO – Elon Walters rushed for 178 yards and a touchdown, leading the Roy C. Ketcham High School football team to a 21-6 victory over Ramapo on Saturday.

The Indians will wrap up the regular season by playing the winner of the Carmel-Suffern game in a non-playoff bowl game next week.

"We played very well on both sides of the ball today,” RCK coach Pat Keevins said. “I was very pleased with the speed that we played with as a team.”

Marquis Smith scored two TDs for the Indians, including one on a pass from Kevin Duke, who threw for 101 yards.

Tyler Campbell had a pair of interceptions among Ketcham’s five forced turnovers.
