The Blues succeeded in ending their winless run by picking up a hard-fought 3-1 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge on Monday night. Interestingly, the team, which had not recorded a win in the last five Premier League games, had to somehow dig deep to overcome a goalkeeping error and secure a crucial three-spot, which nevertheless pushed them up to the top four.
It was the home team that kicked off the match the better of the two, keeping the ball for most of the early minutes of the game. Cole Palmer, the top scorer of the season for the team, tried a curling shot that was aimed at Wolves’ goalkeeper Jose Sa before Tosin Adarabioyo made a breakthrough through a goal in the middle of the first half. He brilliantly controlled a deflected shot from Reece James and slammed the ball into the net in order to register his first Premier League goal for the club.
On the other hand, Chelsea’s momentum was interrupted just before half-time when a goalkeeper blunder by Robert Sanchez cost them dearly. The Spaniard made a blunder as he dropped the ball, resulting in Matt Doherty scoring and equalizing for the visitors. Nonetheless, the Blues reconciled themselves during the halftime break and then made a pulsating comeback in the second half, with Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke shooting the ball into the net to secure the victory.
The win helped Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who was a little relieved that his team had come out of the title contention slump in mid-December but was still in the fight for a Champions League spot. Thus, the outcome of the match had the Blues ascend their return to their top-four position, thus igniting their hope of qualifying for the top competition in Europe next season.
As for the losing side, they still find themselves in a very vulnerable position very close to the danger zone. The manager, Gary O’Neil, will have to gear up his team very quickly to face this important stretch of games in their struggle to avoid the drop. The visitors did exhibit some signs of hope but were often not sharp enough to persistently threaten Chelsea.
As the Premier League approaches the finishing line, it is probably the best period for Chelsea to turn a corner. With upcoming matches against the rest of the top four, this victory could very well be the turning point of the season. At present, there is collective peace for Chelsea’s fans, but the team looks forward to increasing their performance in the next few weeks.
