World tennis abuzz as Djokovic targets calendar Grand Slam

The tennis fraternity is biting its nails as Novak Djokovic is position just one step away from making history at the US Open. After winning the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon this year, Djokovic needs only seven matches to achieve the calendar grand slam which has not been done in men’s tennis since Rod Laver in 1969.

The journey to the finals of the Serbian superstar is not easy as a new generation of players looks to stop him on his quest for greatness. Djokovic has been almost unbeatable throughout the early rounds and has been going through his rivals like a blizzard. His psychological strength, which has generally been a strength of his tennis, appears to have risen to another level in coping with the overwhelming demand of the moment.

The tennis fraternity has different views as to whether this added pressure will work against Djokovic and bring his downfall or work for him in pushing him to greater heights. During the course of a tournament, everybody is waiting for meetings with such opponents as Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner, who have already proved that they can put a lot of pressure on the world number one.

In the absence of Rafael Nadal, due to injury, there has been somewhat an open path for Djokovic but the talent in men’s tennis is so deep that every test will be a tough one. Otherwise, people’s interest in Djokovic’s fight has boosted ticket sales and television audiences to record levels.

The pundits of tennis are at the moment arguing about where this feat falls in the history of sporting records. The possibility of making a Calendar Grand Slam has also brought back memories as to where Djokovic stands in the GOAT debate. In the women’s side of the tournament it is just as interesting as in the men’s one that took place with many participants fighting for the title.

The come back of some past seasons’ players has provided the competition with an extra dimension of excitement, not to mention the youthful talents that are still emerging. The last of the four major events continues to hold the tennis fans breathless as they wait to see whether they will be a witness to a perfect tennis season and Novak Djokovic in the middle of it.
