Gators just won their 29th SEC trophy (here’s why it matters)

By James Wills 4 min read

The Florida Gators captured their 29th SEC Overall All-Sports Trophy in May 2026, claiming the USA Today Network SEC Overall All-Sports Award for the first time since the 2017-18 season. That eight-year gap makes this title feel earned all over more. No lucky streak, no asterisk — just a program that outperformed 15 conference rivals across every sport it fields.

Four SEC championships drove Florida’s 2025-26 all-sports title

Four conference team titles — the most of any SEC school this season — pushed the Gators to the top of the standings. That number matters because the formula behind the award rewards depth, not just a single dominant program carrying the load. Florida scored 171.50 points across 237.75 participating teams, producing a quotient of 0.7213 — just barely ahead of Texas (0.7207) and Texas A&M (0.6917). Frankly, it doesn’t get much tighter than that at the top.

Here are Florida’s four SEC team championships this season :

  • Men’s basketball
  • Women’s cross country
  • Women’s indoor track & field
  • Women’s outdoor track & field

The women’s track and field program deserves special attention. Winning conference titles in cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field completed the first SEC triple crown for Florida women’s T&F since 1996-97. That’s a nearly 30-year wait for that specific combination of dominance. It didn’t go unnoticed in the final standings : Florida finished second in the women’s category with a 0.7143 quotient, trailing only Tennessee (0.7500).

On the men’s side, the Gators landed third overall with a 0.7303 quotient — tied with Texas A&M, behind Texas and Georgia. The men’s basketball SEC title clearly anchored that result. It’s also worth noting that Florida lacrosse won its second consecutive Big 12 Conference title in 2026, adding a cross-conference dimension to an already impressive collective performance.

Individual honors and the weight of 270 all-time SEC team titles

Eight Gators picked up individual conference awards this season, a detail that often gets buried under the team headlines but speaks volumes about the talent pipeline at Gainesville. Skye Blakely took SEC Specialist Gymnast of the Year honors. Kelvin Cheruiyot earned SEC Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Year. Rueben Chinyelu claimed SEC Men’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Year, while Aidan King was named SEC Pitcher of the Year. Josh Liendo won SEC Men’s Swimmer of the Year, and Urban Klavzar received SEC Men’s Basketball Sixth Man of the Year.

On the lacrosse side, Kaitlyn Davies earned Big 12 Lacrosse Midfielder of the Year and Clark Hamilton was named Big 12 Lacrosse Attacker of the Year. That’s eight athletes across seven different sports — exactly the kind of spread that wins all-sports trophies.

Zoom out and the historical picture gets even sharper. Florida now holds 270 all-time SEC team titles, the most in conference history — and leads the second-place school by 19 overall all-sports trophies. The Gators have won 46 SEC titles in the last 10 seasons alone. Their first overall SEC All-Sports title came in 1987-88, and they’ve now extended their streak of winning at least one SEC championship to 48 consecutive seasons, the longest active streak in the conference. University of Florida Athletics Director Scott Stricklin put it plainly : competing in the SEC means facing the nation’s premier programs every single day, and this trophy reflects the commitment demonstrated by Gator coaches, staff and student-athletes throughout the year.

How the SEC all-sports standings actually work — and what comes next for Florida

The scoring method behind the USA Today Network SEC All-Sports Award is worth understanding, because it changes how you read the standings. It’s not simply a points race.

Place School Points Participating teams Quotient
1 Florida 171.50 237.75 0.7213
2 Texas 167.75 232.75 0.7207
3 Texas A&M 161.00 232.75 0.6917
4 Georgia 160.50 241.75 0.6639
5 Tennessee 147.00 232.75 0.6316

Each school’s total points — earned based on finish in each sport — get divided by the number of competing teams in sports that school fields. An SEC baseball championship yields 16 points; equestrian, just 4. That quotient is what determines the final ranking. The final standings were locked in on May 16, after the conclusion of both the SEC baseball and outdoor track and field championships.

This is the sixth year USA Today Network has sponsored the award. Before that, GateHouse Media held the title from 2015-16 through 2019-20, Halifax Media Group gave out trophies from 2011-12 to 2013-14, and the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group ran it from 1994-95 through 2010-11.

Looking ahead, Florida is targeting a top-10 national all-sports finish for the 41st consecutive year — a distinction no other school can claim. The Gators have placed in the nation’s top 10 every single year since 1983. That streak hinges on the outcome of the NCAA College World Series. If you want a real measure of just how relentless this program is, that 41-year streak tells you more than any single trophy ever could. Keep watching Gainesville — this isn’t a peak, it’s a baseline.
